Which is why training the brain to spot happiness first is so, so important!
Now here’s where it all gets really interesting…
YOU are the external influence to the people around you - your boss, your friends, your family, your coworkers. Know what that means? You have no more than 10% influence over their long-term happiness.
Do you know how many things I didn’t do in life because I was afraid of how it would affect the people around me? Worse yet, how many things I did do because I wanted others to be happy. Turns out, there isn’t much I can do about their happiness. I’m off the hook!
No more making myself little so others can feel bigger. No more beating myself up because I can’t be in three places at once. No more apologizing for myself because I laugh a lot, talk a lot and swear like a sailor… (like, a fucking a lot).
No more trying not to fart in yoga class!
Freedom, glorious freedom!
Now I’m not advocating that we should all go out into the world and start acting like total shits to each other. Quite the opposite. Because one of the dearest and most precious gifts we can give those we love is personal responsibility for their own happiness and for their own lives. We can only carry them for so long before we have no more influence on their happiness.
Why deny the right to figure it out for themselves? That’s some love right there!
