What’s on your “Bucket List”? Are you working on fulfilling your life goals? Now is the time!
This year, I found myself walking down a dirt road, to a horse stable in Denver, Colorado. I crossed two wild turkeys, a labyrinth I didn’t know was onsite, endured thin air, and several inclines, before reaching my destination. After lunch, there was usually a recess period when I was in elementary school. As long as the weather was cooperative, we were let loose on the playground before resuming classes for the afternoon.
There was a day when I felt a sudden piercing pain without explanation. It hurt enough to cry! A bee stinger was inserted in my finger, resembling a thorn with a small bulb. One of my friends came over and removed it. I was ushered inside to the office. The secretary claimed she couldn’t call my mother at work, because it wasn’t a local number. Mind you, it was the 1970’s so there was a cost that came with dialing outside a local area code. Nevertheless, I sat there in pain and tears. Someone made a paste with baking soda and put it on my finger. The pain lasted for hours. I never understood why neither of my parents could be called. That was the end of my trust in the office personnel. After that incident, I wanted nothing to do with bumble bees. Absolutely. NOTHING. I remember having long days, nights, and having to take care of myself, a husband, three kids, and an occasional pet. It was like being on a hamster wheel, I just had to keep going. It was a challenging, life transforming journey. Now that I’m an empty nester, I have more time to focus on my goals and growth. In order to fill the empty spaces that were once occupied by rushing to drop off my kids in the morning before work, then making it home in time to prepare a meal, and getting the kids to after-school activities, I had to let go. I was used to being an eight-armed multitasking pro. Learning to unwind isn’t always easy. Habits become a way of life. I had learn to stop burning the candle at both ends, allowing myself to decompress. When I stopped running myself ragged, creativity became my friend and began to flow again.
For decades, staying in balance was a top goal. I wanted to work and play hard, although for a while I found it difficult to play. For whatever the reason, it was easier to seek a level of peace. Then something changed… Have you ever shifted perspective after spending significant time around like-minded individuals? That’s what happened since I joined the SheHive. I play a lot more now! Oftentimes, a purposeful shift brings flow into our lives. One of my mantras for 2019 is, “If it doesn’t flow, the answer is no.” |
