Build Basics is where I called myself an entrepreneur for the very first time
I didn't grow up wanting to own a business. I only knew that I had to leave my corporate job because it was harming my spirit and that my next job - the SheHive - didn't exist yet. So I had to build it.
Trust me, had any one of you started this thing first, I'd be working for you.
I had no clue how to start a business, much less sustain one. Finances, licensing, business plans - rules in general - scare the hell out of me. I had passion, but not much else.
So I turned to the Build Institute in southwest Detroit, a small nonprofit run by entrepreneurs to help want-to-be entrepreneurs vet and launch their business ideas.
Their eight-week Build Basics course helped me develop the SheHive's first business plan and get the initial pieces in place to launch my dream. More importantly it introduced me to a vast support network of others who had done/were doing the same. At one point and time, nearly a quarter of the SheHive KeyHolders were Build Institute alumnae.
After finishing Build Basics, I became so passionate about entrepreneurism as an equalizer for women that I joined the team at Build - first developing training for their facilitators and later as a facilitator when they expanded their offerings to Ferndale. This Fall marks my third time teaching their eight-week business planning course in Ferndale and I'm thrilled to share that we'll be hosting it at the SheHive on Wednesday nights starting in October.
If you are a Ferndale resident or are considering launching a Ferndale-based business and are looking for help vetting your idea and/or developing your initial business plan, please join us! Visit http://buildinstitute.org/ferndale/ to register now online.
Over the course of eight weeks you'll meet with subject matter experts in finance, marketing and licensing while you build out your own business plan. Class fees are calculated on a sliding-scale, making the series affordable to most. And even though we are hosting at the SheHive, this is one of those times we welcome He-Hivers into the mix too! Please share this information with the men in your life looking to launch their small business.
With much love and gratitude,
